As a member of the Covid Underground and more specifically, as a fashion designer, I’ve found a certain kind of liberation in this new movement. The colorful energy, the zest for life, and the relentless pursuit of health and wellness—these values brought us all together, forging a powerful bond amidst a world shaken by the pandemic.
Today, I want to share the one thing I wish everyone knew about the Covid Underground:
We are not driven by fear, but by a desire to thrive.
This movement embodies a proactive take on life, as opposed to a static or passive state of existence. Our strength lies in adapting to unforeseen circumstances, challenging norms and pushing the boundaries of innovation. Let me explain how this has allowed us to grow immensely in various spheres of life.
Reinvention through Adaptation
In the early days of the pandemic, my world as a fashion designer was suddenly thrust into an unrecognizable state. Fashion shows were canceled and demand for luxury garments dwindled. Seemingly overnight, my world was transformed, and I was hurled into the unknown.
I could have succumbed to fear or despair, but instead, I embraced the vulnerability and challenge as an opportunity for positive growth. The Covid Underground helped me channel the collective energy and adapt to the changing landscape. My designs experienced a metamorphosis, resulting in creations that were not only stylish and chic but also, sustainable and health-conscious. Protective, yet aesthetically appealing masks, breathable materials and designs suitable for a socially distant lifestyle became integral to our new way of life.
Creative Resilience
When life as I knew it changed, I chose a dynamic path. I had to reinvent and redesign not just my creations, but also my lifestyle. It was during this period that I found solace in the diverse and eclectic group that makes up the Covid Underground. Being part of this unconventional collective provided me with the inspiration and support I needed to persevere and continue my work.
The Covid-cautious realm is rich in creativity, bursting with resilience and fortitude. We’re constantly innovating and experimenting, catering to the needs of the evolving world around us. Indeed, we’ve created an oasis of art and culture that transcends the darkness of uncertain times.
Fostering Community through Fashion
Our shared commitment to wellbeing and creative expression has birthed functional fashion that elevates personal style while respecting the need for safety measures. We don’t shy away from lively colors and audacious patterns - in fact, we use them as a form of empowerment, celebrating life even when faced with adversity.
Covid Underground has provided a platform for ethical and environmentally friendly fashion, as we strive to make a positive impact on the world. Our creations are thoughtful and intentional, reflecting a belief system that celebrates the harmony between self-expression and responsible living.
Breaking Boundaries
As a member of the Covid Underground, I have witnessed the creation of small networks and communities of like-minded individuals who have forged new ways of living, working, and socializing. We host outdoor, masked events, where we can showcase our work, share ideas, and connect with others who share our beliefs and values.
We reject superficial normalcy; instead, we strive for a deeper and more meaningful sense of normal that arises from adaptability and resilience.
The Covid Underground is an authentic, spirited movement that encourages everyone to rise to meet challenges head-on, embracing unexpected transformations and cherishing the power of the human spirit.
I hope that by sharing my perspective as a fashion designer, more people will appreciate the beauty and strengths that encompass the Covid Underground. We don’t seek solely to survive but to flourish and grow. In a world where people must carefully navigate a post-Covid existence, our creative, adaptable, and empowered counter-culture exemplifies what it means to thrive in the face of change.
The Covid Underground is more than just a response to the pandemic - it is a celebration of the human spirit, and a testament to our capability to transform ourselves in pursuit of better health and brighter futures. And that is the one thing I wish everyone knew about this vibrant movement.
