Hey there, fellow Covid-cautious friends! Shawn here with another incredible adventure from our beloved Covid Underground community. If you’re new here, welcome to a space where we share our experiences, challenges, and victories while prioritizing our well-being during these unpredictable times. Today, I’ve got a story that’s equal parts amusing and heartwarming – one that brought us closer together as a community and showcased our adaptability as Covid Zeros.

Grab your go-to mask, your favorite sanitizer, and let’s dive into the magical night of what I comically call: The Great Masked Bonfire.

Act 1: The Unexpected Invitation

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, the kids were indeed homeschooling – a decision I will never regret – when I received a text from my dear friend and fellow Covid Underground member, Amy. She excitedly informed me that she was organizing a small, Covid-safe, masked bonfire event in her leafy backyard.

If you know me, you’ll know I love a good bonfire. But my inner stay-at-home parent hesitated; I haven’t been to a gathering like this since pre-Covid days. However, Amy reassured me she had thought of everything to make it Covid-cautious, from designated mask stations to pre-measured seating areas. I couldn’t say no, my friends. My curiosity had been sparked.

Act 2: The Preparation

As a somewhat seasoned member of the Covid Underground, I was fully prepared to participate in anything that didn’t involve large crowds or questionable hygiene – the thought alone makes me shudder. I chose to show up to this bonfire in a stylish, limited-edition mask from my coveted collection; after all, why shouldn’t we be both cautious and fashionable?

I packed a kit filled with the essentials: reusable cutlery, a personal hand sanitizer that smelled like lavender, and my trusty portable disinfectant dispenser. Armed with my gear and bundled up like a walking marshmallow, I was ready for anything. Little did I know, the night would bring surprises beyond my wildest dreams.

Act 3: The Mask-arade

Upon arriving at Amy’s beautifully decorated backyard, I noticed several Covid Zeros graciously embracing the idea of a mask-arade. There were masks of all shapes, sizes, and colors – ranging from avant-garde pieces to hand-painted masterpieces. It felt like Halloween, but with a health-conscious twist we could all appreciate.

Amy really outdid herself for this event. Aside from separate sanitation essentials on every table, she also set up a small art corner where people could customize their very own mask, using paint, sequins, and other delightful little baubles from the depths of her crafting treasure chest. Needless to say, we had a blast adding our artistic touches and showing off our unique styles, while making sure personal space was respected.

Act 4: The Socially Distanced Feast

Aside from the artsy fun, you best believe there was plenty of good food to be had. Amy prepared individually portioned dishes and personal-sized servings to ensure minimal touchpoints. We delighted in foil-wrapped burgers, petite salads, and skewers of grilled veggies, all while seated in an elaborate circle around the warm, crackling bonfire.

The mood was so jovial that even “Covid-cautious Carol,” our most notoriously finicky community member, couldn’t resist joining in, carefully observing the proceedings from her foldable chair and sipping homemade mulled wine from her reusable thermal bottle.

Act 5: The Firelight Dance

But, my friends, the pièce de résistance of this enchanting night was most definitely the masked firelight dance. With the blankets of night serving as our backdrop, we paired up – at a safe distance, of course – and danced to the beat of lively tunes from an outdoor Bluetooth speaker, our rhythm fueled by laughter and a united desire to make the most of life in these uncertain times.

Our shadows formed a whimsical dance on the surrounding trees, as our silhouettes twirled, dipped, and swayed with each other. That night, together, we defied our pandemic-induced seclusion and embraced the opportunity to connect with our fellow humans – all while prioritizing our health and safety.

Act 6: The Resolution

Looking back upon that magical evening, I’m filled with gratitude for the Covid Underground community and our shared commitment to living a conscious existence during this pandemic era. The Great Masked Bonfire will forever be remembered as a testament to our resilience, creativity, and camaraderie.

This experience serves as a heartfelt reminder that in the face of adversity, we can – and must – forge our path, one that supports our well-being and fosters genuine connection. As we navigate these tumultuous times, let’s continue to embrace our Covid Zero ideals and create memories that will stand the test of time.

Until the next (masked) adventure, take care of yourselves and each other. Remember, we are in this together, friends.

With love and sanitizer, Shawn
