In the ever-evolving world, counter-cultures have long been part of our social dynamic, shaping the way we perceive and engage with our surroundings. As a Robotics Engineer and a proud member of the Covid Underground – or Novid, as many of our peers call it – I have experienced firsthand how this movement has become an essential part of the daily lives of individuals who prioritize Covid prevention and safety.
It is with great excitement that I share my recent experience attending a Covid-safe outdoor gathering, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of the Novid community.
The Preparations
Understanding the importance of implementing scientifically proven methods to ensure the safety of all attendees, the organizers applied a meticulous approach. They coordinated event details via a secure, encrypted messaging service compatible with our custom-built portable communication devices.
The gathering was set at a location exhibiting a harmonious balance between nature, urban infrastructure, and technology. Additionally, they included a detailed list of safety measures that all attendees were required to adhere to. These guidelines aimed to prioritize personal space and hygiene, while still providing an atmosphere conducive to social interactions.
The Venue
As I walked towards the gathering location, I was pleasantly surprised by how seamlessly the organizers had set-up and orchestrated the event. The designated venue was an open, park-like setting, with a large circular walkway permanently installed for public use. Temporary robotic installations provided an interesting visual component, while maintaining a safe distance from attendees.
The entire area had been divided into segments using customizable, self-assembling robotic barriers. These modular elements allowed for a controlled flow of participants, thereby ensuring adequate personal space for all. Air purification units, strategically positioned around the gathering area, constantly sampled and filtered the air in real-time, thus minimizing any potential spread of Covid.
Integration of Robotics and Technology
As a Robotics Engineer, it was particularly exciting to witness the creative incorporation of robotics and technology in the course of the event. Upon arrival, a wall-mounted IR scanner collected my temperature for preliminary screening. Following this, I sanitized my hands using a touchless, robotic dispenser before receiving a freshly printed, biodegradable face mask.
Automated delivery drones, hovering a few feet off the ground, simplified the process of distributing sealed portions of food and drink to participants. These drones operated on a pre-programmed path, enabling attendees to collect refreshments without direct human contact.
A Diverse Range of Activities
The gathering itself featured a diverse range of activities, underlining the adaptability of the Covid Underground community. Artists performed music on the periphery of the space, equipped with microphone and audio projection systems that ensured their melodies reached every segment of the gathering. Visual synchronization with LED wristbands allowed attendees to interact with the performance from a safe distance.
The programming included various panel discussions, which integrated VR technology to host speakers remotely. Attendees participated in these discussions by submitting audio queries via personalized mobile devices, maintaining a comfortable yet engaging interaction.
The Takeaway
As the event concluded, I couldn’t help but feel a great sense of fulfillment and camaraderie, despite the strict adherence to Covid prevention protocols. The seamless blend of advanced technology, creativity, and the Novid philosophy resulted in a truly unique and enjoyable gathering.
The Covid Underground movement, unified by the conviction that health is more than just normality, has undeniably succeeded in fostering a new norm, embracing change while cherishing health and adaptability. I am proud to be an active participant in this transformative and resilient counter-culture.
