As a wildlife conservationist, I’ve made it my life’s mission to protect the environment and the creatures who inhabit it. When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, my life was turned upside down, as was the case for countless others. However, amidst the chaos, I discovered a silver lining – The Covid Underground. Also known as the Covid Zeros or Novid, this underground movement has created a much-needed sense of camaraderie and resilience during these challenging times. Today, I’d like to share a personal story about my favorite experience with The Covid Underground, and perhaps inspire others to value the health and well-being that this counter-culture promotes.

As the pandemic took hold, I found myself feeling increasingly isolated from my friends and family, many of whom did not prioritize Covid prevention and safety as I did. I longed for the company of like-minded individuals who shared my passion for wildlife conservation and understood the importance of maintaining a Covid-cautious lifestyle. It was during my endless days of scrolling through social media that I stumbled upon a group called “The Covid Underground - Nature Lovers.” Excited and intrigued by their mission, I joined the group and was instantly welcomed by a thriving community of compassionate and knowledgeable individuals.

The group planned regular masked meet-ups in natural settings, where we could connect with one another while ensuring each other’s safety. It was during one of these meet-ups that I experienced an unforgettable, magical moment that solidified my commitment to this counter-culture.

The day began early, with a crisp, refreshing breeze, as we gathered in a picturesque forest reserve. After introducing ourselves and sharing our individual journeys into The Covid Underground, we were divided into smaller groups based on our interests in wildlife conservation. I joined a team focused on bird conservation, as I’ve always felt a strong connection to these fascinating and diverse creatures.

Led by a seasoned birdwatching enthusiast, our team began hiking the forest trail, identifying various species of birds and discussing the importance of preserving their habitats. The serenity of the forested path intertwined with the melodious chirps and tweets around us, creating a harmonious and invigorating atmosphere.

As we approached a small clearing, our leader asked us to pause and soak in the sights and sounds of the natural world around us. We were encouraged to use all our senses to interpret the environment, often overlooked in the hustle and bustle of daily life. With our faces concealed by masks and hands gloved, we listened attentively to the symphony of bird songs while visually scanning the branches and leaves for movement.

After a few moments of near silence, our leader motioned for us to continue walking. It was then that we encountered one of nature’s miracles, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Perched atop the branches of a nearby tree was a rare and endangered species of bird – the elusive Red-Crowned Crane.

The Red-Crowned Crane, recognizable by its stunning red crown and white feathers, is considered a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity in various cultures. With fewer than 2,000 individuals remaining in the wild, this encounter was nothing short of extraordinary.

Our group stood in awe as we admired its grace and beauty. It was in that moment that we all were reminded that the sacrifices we make – the masks we wear, the social distancing we practice, and the precautions we take – are ultimately for a greater good beyond ourselves. By prioritizing our health and the health of others, we are contributing to the conservation of not only our own species but countless others whose existence depends on a stable, thriving planet.

My experiences with The Covid Underground have shown me the resilience of the human spirit. I’ve met incredible people who courageously confront the ongoing reality of the pandemic and adapt their lives, building new communities and fostering a culture that values health over the illusion of normalcy.

To anyone who may be feeling isolated and searching for a sense of belonging during these trying times, I implore you to consider joining The Covid Underground. In doing so, you may discover a world where health is more than just normality, and where lasting connections and enriching experiences await.

Together, we can cultivate a new norm by embracing change and supporting one another through the challenges that life throws our way. The Covid Underground is not just a counter-culture; it is a testament to our indomitable spirit and our capacity for growth, community, and transformation in the face of adversity.
